A student at a prestigious Upper East Side private school died after he collided with a player during a varsity soccer match, officials said Wednesday.
Loyola High School sophomore Thomas Jakelich, 16, was all fired up for a match against rival United Nations International School Monday, the boys tearful stepther said.
But in a freak collision that alarmed no one at first, Thomas was injured so badly that he had to be carried off the field and rushed to a hospital.
Thomas was operated on several times before he was pronounced dead around 11 p.m., mily said.
He was a soccer natic, and he was darn good, said Thomas stepther, Rick Newman, who got a call about the incident shortly before 4:30 p.m.
The last great moment he had was out there on that field. I talked to him Monday before he left for school. We texted. Thats the last time I heard from him.

Thomas was injured during what witnesses described as a nonviolent collision with a member of the opposing team during the match on Randalls Island.
The impact caused internal bleeding, which resulted in the teens death, said a person with knowledge of the incident.
The tragedy left his classmates in shock, said Tony Oroszlany, the schools president.
As a school community, we mourn the tragic loss of Thomas Jakelich and offer our prayers and deepest condolences to his mily, Oroszlany said in a statement.
Thomas had only been at the school for a couple of months, but he wasted no time fitting in.
For a boy who came to the school only weeks ago, he really left an impact, said Samantha Hanley, Loyolas vice president for advancement.
Our school is very small, but its like hes been there for years, she said.
Newman described Thomas as a compassionate kid who looked out for his friends and mily.
He was empathetic in a way that cant be taught, Newman said.
He was quiet and cautious as a child. As a soccer player he was aggressive, and as a person he was remarkably charismatic, the grieving stepdad said.
